Their Finest (M)

A group of filmmakers struggling to make an inspirational film in order to boost morale in the midst of London’s Blitz is the latest crowdpleasing period drama from director Lone Scherfig (An Education).

Gemma Arterton stars as screenwriter Catrin Cole, charged with bringing a female perspective to the war films produced by the British Ministry of Information’s Film Division. Struck by the stories of British civilians who rescued soldiers after the retreat at Dunkirk, Catrin heads to Devon on location, and on the way must earn the respect of her cast and crew, not least snooty veteran actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy).

Co-starring Sam Clafin, Helen McCrory, Eddie Marsan, Richard E. Grant and Jeremy Irons, Their Finest is a witty and intelligent affirmation of women’s contributions to the film industry, led by a sterling performance from Gemma Arterton.
